Q: Do the inmates have chronic diseases before they enter the prison, can they receive continuous medical treatment in the prison?
A: Since year 102 January 1, inmates of Taiwan Prison are eligible for National Healthcare System services. Kinmen prison provides family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, psychiatry, dentistry, dermatology and any other medical services. Inmates who have chronic diseases would get continuous medical treatment. If the symptom of inmates cannot be treated inside the clinic, who will be transferred to hospital base on doctor’s diagnosis and recommendation. Inmates are required to bring health insurance cards, money, relevant physical diagnostic certificate, medical prescriptions, medicine package and or manufacture packed medicine for reference purposes.
Q: Whether the prescribed medicine can be carried or sent by family members when entering the prison?
A: According to the provisions of Article 11 of Physician’s Law: “Patients are not personally examined by certified physicians may not be treated or prescribed…” In order to avoid the violation against the regulation, after the implementation of the Second Generation Health Insurance Law, inmates who are incarcerated in the correctional institution whom the medicine used should be provided by the contracted Health Insurance Special Pharmacy Bureau. Therefore, in addition to the continuous prescription of chronic diseases, inmates can apply for the drug through mails within 3 months, but the previous prescription obtained before entering the prison will not beallowed within 2 weeks.
Q: If insulin is needed, can the injection be carried inside the correctional institution?
A: 1.When the inmates arrived, he/she must carry an official certified diagnosis, medical prescription, related drug and syringe. It is necessary to be used by the physician.
2.Since year 102, inmates who have legal health insurance, the insulin application can be applied for medical treatment base on proper procedure. The doctors will evaluate inmates’ current condition and provide right amount of dosage and treatment.
